Blocking the Crown
For the crown, a natural knotted sisal hood has been used. This also needs to be stiffened, so make up your solution in the same way as for the brim. Before you start, lay out a few sheets of fresh kitchen towel or paper hand towels. With the straw hood folded in half lengthways, carefully submerge it in the liquid. Move the hood around and turn it so it has equal contact with the stiffener all over. Remove from the bowl and lay it on the paper towels. Leave for a minute or two to soak in. Then blot with a piece of paper towel to ensure no stiffener is left on the surface. Do this all over the hood.
Make sure the bowler block has fresh cling film on it. Pull the hood over the block, keeping the centre of the hood on the centre of the tip of the block (that’s the very middle bit) – there is a woven detail that makes lining this up easy. Push firmly down the block, smoothing and pulling as you go. Pin at CB, CF and sides, and then roll the blocking spring down to help hold the straw in place.
Pull the straw below the spring to make it really smooth to the block with no wrinkles showing. Pin all the way around and leave to dry. The textured pattern in the weave should look straight and even. There will be quite a lot of excess sisal, but this will be cut off later. Leave the crown on the block for now, so that it doesn’t lose its shape.
Block the sisal firmly and evenly.
